Karlovic - Gunneswaran
Ivo Karlovic 40th year old Croatian player in 3rd round against debutant at Masters tournament Prajnesh Gunneswaran. It was not expected that neither of them would come so far away. Karlovic was in very bad shape before coming to the tournament so he lost three times in a row in the first round at the tournaments twice since Albatros and once Granollers. While the Indian debuts at his first Masters level tournament.
I think that Gunneswaran discovers this tournament and that he lives his dream right now, playing the best tennis of his career. He had to play qualifiers to get to the main draw. In the first round he played against the talented and unstable Paire with this player he never knew what you did but he showed good tennis, both played attractive and attacking tennis, but in the end he showed himself as a concentrator and got in two sets. The clues were that Indain won 78% of the points after the first service and used 4/6 of the break points and also attacked his oppontet at second service where he won 64% of the points.
The second round was not really expected to get Basilashvili who is currently world number 18 . It was rumored that his ship was sunk when he had a 5-3 defeat and he served for the third set but managed to stabilize and took the tie in the tiebreak he got and is probably one of the biggest victories for him at the moment. He played stably all match long , so he put in the first and second high-ranking service and made only one double fault.
He showed himself capable of playing against good players and I think if he continues like this, continues to play this tennis that is displayed in the tournament he can finish up to top 50 so quick. And that will show on his current match this will be another test of his game against the service king Karlovic.
Karlovic come to the tournament with three lost matches in a row, but still he was former world number 14 and if his service goes in ,he is impossible to break it. There are 38 aces to this masters so far and 10 double faults. But he offered 6 BP, I think the story with Karlovic should ended in the first round, where Ebden did not 5 BP and took the match in two tie breaks, where old Karlovic had enough experience and he finished the match with 2 tiebreak wins. In the second round he played against his country-side Coric, where everything was based on the service, Karlovic managed to take advantage of the ball when it was most needed and he came in the tiebreak where he won again.
But why I am playing on Indian today , apart from his own talent, and what Ivo has broken twice at the tournament, means that the Indians may get a chance to break again, because he is leftie and Karlovic do not have good experience with this type of player. This statistic is for period from beginning of 2016 till now.
-Won 11 out of 28 matches
- He lost at least the set in 26 of 28 matches
-In these 28 matches there were played 35 tiebreaks and Karlovic won only 11.
- Two years in a row he lost agains leftie players on this tournament
Ivo has never been known for his return games. So, Gunneswaran must ensure that he holds his own service games and then try to find opportunities in the Croatian’s service games to break. The Indian certainly is in with a chance to cause one more upset.
