Netherlands - Austria
Netherlands left it late but eventually beat Ukraine 3-2 on Sunday. Frank de Boer s side were 2-0 up at one point but eventually scored an 85th-minute winner after being pegged back to 2-2. Austria opened up a solid 3-1 win over Macedonia on Sunday after some turgid performances in the build up to Euro 2020. They have lost each of their last six meetings with the Netherlands. It was vitally important for both nations that they started Euro 2020 with a win as both entered the tournament with serious doubts over them. The winner of this match will most likely go on to top the group. Wout Weghorst vindicated his selection against Ukraine with a goal and he will continue to lead the line with Memphis Depay. Matthijs de Ligt wasn t even in the matchday squad on Sunday as he continues to work his way back from a groin injury. Nathan Ake and Joel Veltman are options if Frank de Boer freshens things up in defence. Owen Wijndal will hope to replace Patrick van Aanholt at left wing-back after coming off the bench on Sunday. David Alaba was a surprise starter at centre-back for Austria on Sunday night. It was expected he would either line up on the wing or in central midfield. Konrad Laimer proved his fitness to start against North Macedonia and registered an assist in their 3-1 win. Julian Baumgartlinger was also raited a doubt ahead of Sunday s game but managed minutes of the bench in the second half.
Sasa Kalajdzic has competition from Marko Arnautovic to start up front on Thursday.
